Raspberries – Raspberries
Raspberries present a reason why power pop was the most popular music before Rihanna. Fantastic “one chord wonder” guitar riffs, lyrics sweet as socialist heart and naïve like one. Simple rock n roll songs composed by professional musicians created a unique musical phenomenon in the history, that will probably never occur again. Although this particular album is not puritan power pop (you can heat Small faces and Beatles influence), legend says that the original vinyl has scratch and sniff sticker with raspberry scent, if Raspberries would be a girl I will definitely “Go all the way” with her.
Mary Monday (and the Bitches) – I Gave My Punk Jacket To Rickie’ b/w ‘Popgun
If there’s anything that improves the first wave punk rock sound that’s female vocalist. Canadian emigrant, former stripper, mysterious death, leather jackets. Is there anything more punk rock than that? Absolute diamond from Bay Area.
Leatherface – Mush
When I am in a mood for some revolution tunes and not necessary want to open any Bakunin works I always return to Leatherface or other Frankie Stubbs projects. The band from Sunderland puts a “power pop” into the hardcore punk and intellectual breath of fresh air into dusty punk ideological clichés (surprisingly still alive these days) which would remind all of us what punk rock is all about. From the musical perspective Leatherface still sounds unique after almost 30 years of releasing Mush.
Cherry Casino & The Gamblers – Fat Mama’s daughter
There’s a niche in Rock´n´roll and neo Rockabilly music – all bands and former punk rockers singing same boring songs about graveyards with double bass, and Cherry Casino and the Gamblers fill it. Everything on this album screams 50’s analogue sound (vintage tube amp, tape echo, P90s Gibson). If you would like to find out if it’s even possible to play rockabilly without tattoos, hot rods and Gretsch give it a go. It’s also my “to go” album when “normal” guests and family are around.
Bulbulators – Principes Mortales Punk Aeterna
If I would have an opportunity to promote some Silesian bands and at the same time prove Martin Suicide wrong, that there are only New Wave and Reggae bands in Poland. I will do this with no hesitation. Bulbulators are well known brand with 77 label on polish punk rock scene since 1989, although there were experimenting with the sound and style. From „Principes Mortales Punk Aeterna“ (2010) album their sound became mature and consistent. They are also one of the few veteran punk bands who don’t look and behave like bunch of sad, old men in baggy cargo trousers and turtle neck polar jumpers. And Iglak can actually sing, which I highly appreciate.

Raspberries představují důvod, proč byl popík oblíbený, ještě než tu byla Rihanna. Fantastické “one chord wonder” kytarové riffy, texty sladké a naivní jak levicová srdce. Jednoduché rock´n ´rollové kompozice od profesionálních muzikantů vytvořily hudbení fenomén, který už se asi nikdy nezopakuje. Mimo to, zrovna tohle album není nijak puritánsky power popové, je z něj cítit inspirace Small Faces a Beatles. Legenda říká, že originální vinyl měl stírací a jahodově vonící středovou samolepku. Kdyby byli Raspberries holka, určitě bych „Go all the way“ s ní!

Pokud existuje něco, co by mohlo vyšperkovat první vlnu punku, tak je to dívčí zpěv. Kanadská emigrantka, bývalá striptérka, záhadná smrt, kožený bundy – existuje něco víc “punk” než tohle? Totální klenot z Bay area.

Když mám náladu na nějaké revoluční songy a nemám čas číst Bakuninovy tlustopisy, vždy se vracím k Leatherface nebo jinému projektu Frankie Stubbse. Kapela ze Sunderlandu vnáší do HC punku lehce power popový zvuk a intelektuální dech čerstvého vzduchu do prašných punkových ideologických klišé (překvapivě stále existujících!) a která nám všem připomíná, o čem punk rock je. Z hudebního hlediska zní Leatherface stále svěže i po 30 letech od vydání Mush.

Existuje díra v rock´n´rollové a neo rockabilly hudbě – všechny kapely a bývalí punkrockeří zpívají stejné a nudné písně o hřbitovech – Cherry Casino and Gamblers ji vyplňují. Ze všeho na tomto albu křičí analogový zvuk 50. let (vintage zesíky, magnetofony, Gibson a “Pédevadesátky”). Pokud chcete zjistit, jestli je možné hrát rockabilly bez tetovaček, Hot Rodů a Gretschů – zkuste tohle. Je to také moje oblíbené album, když jsou v okolí „normální“ hosté a rodina.

Kdybych měl možnost zapromovat nějakou slezskou kapelu a ještě dokázat Martinovi Suicide, že se plete s tím, jak jsou teď v Polsku jen new wave a reggae kapely, udělám to bez váhání. Bulbulators – velmi známá firma na polské scéně od roku 1989 s vlastním 77 labelem. Ačkoli často experimentovali se zvukem a stylem, od alba „Principes Mortales Punk Aeterna“ (2010) se jejich zvuk stal vyspělejším a konzistentnějším. Jsou také jednou z mála starších punkových kapel, která nezačala vypadat a chovat se jako banda smutných páprdů v kapsáčích a vytahaných rolácích. A Iglak skutečně umí zpívat, toho si velmi cením.
